drawn to the rhythm of the sea
It had been an entire week since Kaisa had last set foot on the stones of the lower decks. The pleasant updraft of salty air hit her in a hard gust, and her eyes shut to soak in the feeling. Each black scale on her face and body seemed to shift toward the glinting sunlight, in a battle for the warm feeling it offered. Limsa Lominsa was oddly calm and empty--she took the opportunity to claim the circle of grass beneath the only tree stretching its branches near the aetheryte. Merchants hocked their wares to passersby, pirates on a nearby dock roughhoused, and it was the most at home she'd felt in days.
The grass itched beneath her bare legs, but it was a pleasant itch that reminded Kaisa of her roots, which were only a few years behind. Selling golden trinkets and sleeping in the streets were pleasantly distant memories. And now, surrounded by friends and with a home of her own, her life felt whole.
The Au Ra's closed eyes still felt the shadows that suddenly loomed over her. Looking through thick lashes, Kaisa glanced upward...and then upward some more. A fairly hefty Roe stood blocking the sunlight from her view. When she realized the precious grimoire that was always handy was, in fact, still on the desk in the Free Company house, the previously warming sea breeze felt suddenly cold and bitter. This fellow was certainly not here for pleasant conversation, and neither were the toothy thugs standing behind him--the knives in their hands were a dead giveaway of that.
"We heard you was fresh into some gil, miss. Thought maybe you had a generous heart, wanted to part ways wiff a bit of it."
Of course, Kaisa had not forgotten the million plus gil she had saved for events. The Au Ra tried to sink herself into the grass and look relaxed, but she was fairly sure it looked more like cowering. The merchants, who had been shouting their prices, suddenly sounded much farther away. They'd intentionally roamed further into Hawker's Alley to avoid this conflict.
Unless one of her friends came by, she'd be fighting this battle completely alone. Not even Ifrit would be by her side.
